Seminars and Workshops Digital Storytelling: A Participatory Action Research Method

Topic of Research Seminar: Digital Storytelling: A Participatory Action Research Method

Abstract: Using a variety of cases in Participatory Action Research (PAR)- the topic explores the methodological potential of Digital Storytelling (DST) under the Freirean epistemology of Conscientization. In doing so, the levels of conscientization- i.e. Cultural, Dialogic, and Power Structure Awareness- will be systematically studied. The first set of cases illustrates the symbolic and pedagogical potential of DST in constructing agentive identities among adults and youth in one Bay Area community. These cases unpack the role of new learning spaces and symbolic tools in fostering reflection about concepts of self and agency. The second set of cases deals with a Trauma Narrative Intervention for Children. These cases reveal how dialogic awareness, which manifests itself in Freire’s liberating pedagogy, is central to the trauma narrative intervention. While co-authoring their narratives with the help of trusted healthcare providers, trauma patients exercise power through discourse, and thereby develop a better understanding of the existing power structures around them.
