Topic of Research Seminar: Design And Development of High Entropy Matrix – Ceramic Reinforced Composites for Structural Applications

Abstract: High entropy alloys (HEA) are an emerging class of metallic materials that has shown the potential to outsmart conventional alloy systems in terms of different physical and mechanical properties. The pursuit of materials with superior properties has led to the emergence of ceramic reinforced high entropy matrix composites, which are relatively new and have the potential to become top contenders for various high-end industrial applications, including aerospace. Judicious selection of reinforcement for a particular HEA matrix and of the manufacturing route is very critical to obtain desired set of properties. Research work in the field of high entropy composites, has been started five years ago and in multiple research orientations. These orientations include utilization of different type of HEA matrices and incorporation of various ceramic reinforcements via different manufacturing routes. Properties such as hardness, wear resistance, tribology, COF, mechanical and corrosion properties have been found to significantly improve with the addition of ceramic reinforcement to the corresponding base HEA matrix. Novel CoCrFeNi HEA-based composites with SiC and TiB2 ceramic particles were developed through arc melting. The resulting composites were characterized for their microstructure, crystal structure, mechanical, thermal, and surface properties. Promising results were obtained, suggesting that the development of HEA composites is a viable approach for achieving exceptional mechanical properties in HEAs for advanced structural applications.
