Topic Research Seminar: Design and Performance Evaluation of a Hemispherical Solar Still for Sustainable Water Desalination

Abstract: This research focuses on the mechanical design, fabrication, and thermal performance assessment of a hemispherical solar still, developed as an off-grid solution for clean water generation in water-scarce regions. Leveraging its geometric advantage, the hemispherical dome maximizes solar radiation absorption and enhances condensation efficiency through uniform internal heat distribution. Key design aspects—such as basin insulation, material selection, and dome curvature—were optimized to improve productivity and thermal efficiency. Experimental analysis under controlled and ambient conditions revealed a marked increase in distillate yield compared to traditional solar still designs. The study highlights the role of passive solar desalination technologies in addressing water scarcity through mechanical innovation and energy-efficient design.
