Topic of Research Seminar: Development of Oceanographic Acoustic Modelling Tools for Streamlined Transmission Loss Analysis

Abstract: Accurate modelling of underwater acoustic transmission is crucial for various oceanographic engineering technologies, such as sonar systems. Traditionally, this modelling process involves manually retrieving data from multiple online repositories, creating program- specific model files to describe oceanic environments and bathymetry, using standard tools like BELLHOP for numerical simulations, followed by plotting using external tools.

In this article, we introduce a unified Python-based interface designed to streamline the entire workflow of acoustic modelling. This interface facilitates efficient data acquisition, refinement, and storage, and automates the generation of model files (.ENV and .BTY). Our command-line based software is platform- independent and seamlessly integrates with the BELLHOP binaries. We also present a modern, gridded dataset optimized for portability, extendability, and computational efficiency. Additionally, we provide a suite of auxiliary scripts to enhance visualization and metadata exploration.

The article includes a comprehensive review of data sources, discusses key design decisions, and outlines directions for future development.
