Topic of Research Seminar: Modern High Voltage Insulation Systems and Environmental Considerations

Abstract: The proper operation of electrical power transmission & distribution system depends on adequate insulation and its condition. Insulators work under high temperature, humidity, ultraviolet radiations, electrical and mechanical stresses in the outdoor environment. These conditions cause the deterioration of insulation materials with the passage of time hence affecting their performance in the outdoor environment. Such conditions require high quality materials with high resistance against these environmental conditions. Modern insulation materials include polymers and their composites with the incorporation of inorganic oxide fillers. The performance of these materials should be tested from various perspectives such aging against above mentioned environmental conditions, insulation characteristics (permittivity, tan𝛿, resistivity, partial discharge, and impulse endurance etc.) and chemical compatibility.

This seminar is designed to impart a basic understanding of modern high voltage insulation systems, challenges, and opportunities. The impact of environmental conditions on the physiochemical and insulation characteristics of insulation technologies will be viewed. The lecture will also explore the shortcomings of current insulation technologies. The recent work conducted on the modern insulation systems and research gaps will also be discussed.
