Seminars and Workshops PT-symmetric Hamiltonians

Topic of Research Seminar: PT-symmetric Hamiltonians

Abstract: Usual quantum theory suggests that the operators corresponding to physically observable quantities must be Hamiltonian to guarantee real eigenvalues as measurement results. In the past few years, it has been recognized that the requirement of Hermiticity, to obtain the real eigenvalues, may be replaced by the less mathematical and more physical requirement of space-time reflection symmetry (known as PT-symmetry). The alternative theory defined by non-Hermitian PT-symmetric Hamiltonians exhibits strange and unexpected properties at the classical and quantum levels. In this seminar, I will discuss the properties of non-Hermitian PT-symmetric quantum theories and will explain how the requirement of Hermiticity can be replaced by the property PT-symmetry while obtaining the real eigenvalues.
