Seminars and Workshops Studies on Coordinated Operation of Transmission and Distribution Systems with High Penetration of Renewable Energy

Topic of Research Seminar: Studies on Coordinated Operation of Transmission and Distribution Systems with High Penetration of Renewable Energy

Abstract: As renewable energy sources become more prevalent in modern power grids, distribution systems have evolved from passive to active players. However, the current separate management systems for transmission and distribution struggle to deal with challenges like optimal dispatch and congestion. This seminar focuses how to create a unified approach for managing both systems, called TSDS, with minimal information exchange. Three coordination models are explored with high renewable energy integration: one focusing on decentralized coordination, another on stochastic coordination, and the third on coordinating for risk management during unexpected events. The first model introduces a hierarchical system with a coordinator to simplify the complexity of managing both transmission and distribution. By shifting some tasks from the transmission operator to this coordinator, the burden on the transmission operator is reduced. The second model proposes a probabilistic approach to handle uncertainties caused by renewable energy. By using statistical measures like mean and standard deviation, it aims to find a balance between accuracy and computational efficiency. The third model focuses on managing risks, particularly during unexpected outages. It divides the problem into coordinating resources and optimizing power flow, ensuring both transmission and distribution systems remain secure.
